ADELAIDE CALVERT

Jennifer Carnell

A photograph of Mrs. Charles Calvert taken in 1907.

Born Adelaide Biddles, Mrs. Calvert acted with her sister Clara Biddles and Braddon in the early 1850s when all three were teenage actresses. They also acted with a young actor called Charles Calvert, who was to marry Adelaide. Like Braddon, Adelaide Biddles was also an aspiring playwright and poet, but unlike Braddon she went on to become a famous actress.

For biographies of Adelaide Calvert, her sister Clara and her husband Charles Calvert, see my book Mary Elizabeth Braddon and the Victorian Theatre.
