A woodburytype photograph of the Victorian artist Alfred Elmore

Mary Elizabeth Braddon was friends with the artist Alfred Elmore. From a letter in my collection, it can be seen the novelist gave him the title for one of his most famous paintings: the 'sensation' painting On the Brink.
