SCOTTISH AMBROTYPE OF A SURVEYOR
Victorian Photograph Collection of Jennifer Carnell

I first saw this ambrotype being sold in a lot at an auction in Edinburgh.
It was with other pictures of the same man, including a daguerreotype, and there was also another ambrotype.
The ambrotype was clearly taken at the same time as this one and it showed him standing with a theodolite and holding a pith helmet and a scroll.
A dealer later broke the lot up and, while the theodolite ambrotype was too expensive for me, this one was not and I bought it.
It's narrower than usual quarter plate and I would think there was a good chance it was taken in Scotland and the sitter was Scottish.
