A woodburytype photograph of Ellen Nye Chart, circa 1875.

Ellen Nye Chart joined Henry Nye Chart's company at the Theatre Royal, Brighton, some years after Braddon had left the stage.

Ellen Elizabeth Rollason was born in Islington, London in 1839, the daughter of John Rollason (a carpenter) and his wife Mary. In 1867 Ellen Rollason married Henry Nye Chart.

Braddon had remained close friends with her former manager, and was very fond of his wife. After Henry Nye Chart died, Ellen became the manager of the Theatre Royal, and Braddon and Maxwell often visited with their children. William Maxwell became best friends with Mr. and Mrs. Chart's son, Henry, and after Ellen's death Mary Braddon campaigned for a hospital bed in Ellen's memory - a bed to be reserved for the care of a theatrical without means.
