Henry Braddon, the Father of Mary Elizabeth Braddon
by
Jennifer Carnell

This copy of John Marchmont's Legacy came from the library of Braddon's brother Sir Edward Braddon. He had inherited it from their father, solicitor Henry Braddon. Mary Braddon had never forgiven her father for his infidelity and the unhappiness he had brought to her mother, and it is an indication of their continued estrangement that she had not given him a copy of her novel and that he bought a single volume edition on 31 August 1866, three years after it was first published.
