French's Variety Agency in Charing Cross

'Can always place reliable and finished acts'. Jack French (1869-c.1947) was born in Spitalfields. His real name was Jacob Frenchman and his parents Michael (also known as Myer) and Betsy were immigrants from Holland.

In 1871 he was living with his parents, sister Mary (also known as Milly), and brothers Michael and Moses at 28 Great Pearl Street in Spitalfields, where his father worked as a rag porter. In 1888 Jacob married Frances Levy and they set up home in Bethnal Green. In 1891 Jacob was a clerk for a wool merchant and in 1901 he had his own business as a woollen and paper stock merchant.

But by 1911 the family had changed direction entirely; Jacob was now known as Holborn music hall agent Jack French and his three children Rosa (Rosetta Frenchman born 1890), Lillian (Leah Frenchman born 1892) and Maurice (Moss Frenchman born 1894) were music hall artistes.
