Written in 1874, The Missing Witness was performed as Genevieve in Liverpool at the Royal Alexandra Theatre. Set in 1836, Braddon's melodrama features an intrepid heroine, Genevieve the 'missing witness,' who tries to protect her foster brother and his fiancee from a villain's evil machinations, and an elaborate set piece featuring an avalanche.

This edition has been reprinted unabridged from the rare edition - virtually the only copy in existence - published by John and Robert Maxwell in 1880, and included in this reprint are newly compiled contemporary articles and reviews of the Liverpool production.
