William Sawyer (1828-1882)
William Sawyer and Mary Elizabeth Braddon

By
Jennifer Carnell

A portrait of William Sawyer, circa 1880.

William Kingston Sawyer and his wife Mary Jane were close friends of Mary Braddon during her years on the stage in Brighton and for the years afterwards. Sawyer was a journalist and all three shared poetic ambitions. After Braddon became a successful novelist, William Sawyer became a frequent contributor to Belgravia and a successful newspaper editor in his own right.
